It is with a full heart that I announce the commencement of the 2020 legends baseball club collegiate summer season.

It has been a roller coaster journey. Nobody has the “how to operate a collegiate summer baseball program during a global pandemic handbook.” Being a league and baseball program with mostly local players, who live at home, and drive themselves to the games, we were in the position where we could wait, and let things play out before making a decision. 

Ultimately we left that decision up to the players and their families. We asked them to vote on two options: 

Option A) Suspend operations in 2020 and gear up for 2021

Option B) dig our heels in and stay together just in case things opened up eventually, knowing there’s a chance we might not play at all this summer. 

The overwhelming majority chose option B. The players in our program have inspired us. Their commitment, patience, flexibility, and understanding of the situation have been incredible to witness. So, it brings me much joy to help deliver a season of baseball, and a step towards normalcy for the athletes.

Please understand our games this summer may look a little different due to the circumstances. Still, we are committed to protecting the health of all players, families, and staff involved in the Sunset Baseball League. 

Thank you to all the players and parents who stuck with us. Thanks to the Sunset Baseball League owners for working together to keep a competitive seven-team league, with a 30 game schedule. 

Lastly, I want to give a massive shoutout to Victor Espinoza, the commissioner of the Sunset baseball league. Vic was (and still is) the driving force behind us achieving the impossible and maintaining a baseball league in 2020. Vic has put in hundreds of volunteer hours to deliver baseball to the 200+ athletes in the SBL this season. We are grateful to have Vic on our side.
